11+ secondary admissions examinations determine entry into academically selective private and grammar schools at Year 7. 11+ is the most common secondary admission age, and is the chosen format for almost all selective girls and mixed sex schools, as well as many boys schools. They are commonly the first major assessment that a child will come across. They are arguably one of the most important assessments, as the ethos and standard of a secondary school plays a significant role in the academic and social development of a child, as well as helping to determine the path they take beyond school.

Most commonly, there is a pre-test, followed by another assessment, which may be school-specific.

It is important not to confuse 11+ with 13+ admissions procedures, as many 13+ pathways with have assessments in Year 6 which overlap with he 11+ assessments. It is also worth noting that ‘Common Entrance’ is sometimes used to refer to private secondary admissions assessments. These can be at 11+ or 13+.
