Athena Tuition

Online and London-based History Tutors

Why Study History?

They say “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes”.
Not only is History extremely interesting from the perspective of understanding how human civilisation advanced from primitive times to the world we experience today, but it is also useful to learn about successful and unsuccessful decisions made by people in times past, and therefore how we as individuals can make better decisions today.
As culture and society have changed a great deal over the centuries, the human animal has remained the same, with the same emotions, urges, vices and vulnerabilities, just slotted into different eras surrounded by different technologies and opportunities.
By learning how greed, jealousy, fear, and optimism have shaped previous epochs, for good and for bad, one can develop wisdom to become less impulsive and more rational in one’s own life.

London-based and online history tutors with Athena Tuition

For an explanation of how our tutor onboarding and selection works, please see our How It Works page.
Our tuition can be long-term supplementary support for students throughout their course, or can be very targeted, higher-intensity tuition in the lead up to assessments.
Tuition tends to revolve around:
Tuition at the university level can be more idiosyncratic, dependent on the request.

What levels do you offer history tuition for?

We offer History tuition for all levels. The most common requests are for:
However, we are also able to provide more niche support, such as at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, and also overlapping fields (History and Philosophy of Science, Anthropology, Evolutionary Biology and Geology, to name a few).

How does in-person history tutoring work?

Most typically, this would involve a tutor commuting to your home to teach in a 1-1 setup. It can also be arranged to meet the tutor in another location, such as a library, if agreed between both parties. In-person tuition does come at a premium compared with online tuition, due to the travel time and cost either side of the lesson.

Can I receive online history tuition?

Yes, we are more than happy to arrange online tuition sessions.

Can I request a trial session?

At Athena Tuition, we don’t request payment blocks/commitment to chunks of hours, so there are no trial sessions as such. Instead, clients are free to cancel at any stage, whether it be after the first, fifth or 500th lesson; we just ask that 24 hrs’ notice is provided.
Ahead of any lessons, the prospective client will be able to have a free-of-charge call with the tutor. This is the opportunity to get a more nuanced feel for the tutor to see if they’d be the right fit. Feel free to ask questions; the tutor will likely have questions, too, and if all is in order, a first lesson can be scheduled during this call.

One of our experienced tutors

Zach

Zach is a University of Cambridge History graduate and full-time tutor with over 10 years of experience. He is well-versed in the key areas of Early and Late Modern History covered in standard syllabuses, as well as many more niche areas, too. Beyond History, he is able to support with Humanities subjects.

How do we track progress?

Tuition success can be tracked both quantitatively and qualitatively. Lessons and homework will involve students answering questions, which tutors can mark to give an indication of attainment.
Progress can also be measured at school; if homework and assessment grades are improving, this suggests the tuition is being effective.
Tutors provide reports to parents either on a per-lesson basis or monthly. These will summarise what has been covered in the lesson, highlight any strengths and weaknesses, and give recommendations. They may also outline a homework set, so parents can be on the case to ensure this gets done on time.
The final, and perhaps most important way, to gauge the success of the tuition is simply, does the student enjoy the lessons? Do they leave them feeling upbeat about the subject, looking forward to the next lesson, etc.? As from this will come motivation and then things like attainment targets can almost take care of themselves.
