11 plus secondary admissions examinations determine entry into academically selective private and grammar schools at Year 7

11 plus is the most common secondary admission age, and is the chosen format for almost all selective girls and mixed-sex schools, as well as many boys schools.

They are commonly the first major assessment that a child will come across.

They are arguably one of the most important assessments, as the ethos and standard of a secondary school play a significant role in the academic and social development of a child. Secondary Schools also help to determine the path a child may take beyond school.

The reputation of top-quality UK schools precedes them, and they are highly competitive, drawing on an international applicant pool in the case of private schools.

11 Plus Tutoring with Athena

Our 11+ tutors are specialists in the admissions procedure.

We always strive to match your child with a tutor experienced with the admissions process of the desired schools to which he or she wishes to apply.

Matching with each school’s admissions process is important in gaining a competitive advantage as, particularly with private schools, the admissions procedures are idiosyncratic and can be specific to each school.

The number of exams and their difficulty/syllabus content may vary, as may the nature of the interview (whether there is an academic component, the utilisation of props, etc.). Most commonly, there is a pre-test, followed by another assessment, which may be school-specific.

A specialist tutor who knows the format in absolute detail enables the learning process to be as efficient and as relevant as possible.

Key information on admissions procedures for young people

It is important not to confuse 11+ with 13+ admissions procedures, as many 13+ pathways have assessments in Year 6 which overlap with the 11+ assessments. The name ‘11+’ or ‘13+’ refers to the age of entry into the new school, not the age during which the assessment(s) are sat.  Read our 13+ common entrance page for more information.

It is also worth noting that ‘Common Entrance’ is sometimes used to refer to private secondary admissions assessments. These can be at 11+ or 13+.
