At Athena Tuition, we provide tailored tuition, so we’ll match you with engineering tutors either online or across London, to ensure you have the ideal tutor for your studies.
Engineering Overview
Engineering revolves around the implementation of scientific principes and knowledge to design and build products that benefit society. It is therefore a particularly exciting discipline as engineers can work right on the cutting edge of technology that transforms the way people live their lives.
Engineering breakdown
- Engineering extends over multiple areas:
- Aerospace Engineering
- Biomedical Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Electrical & Electronic Engineering
- Manufacturing Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Molecular Bioengineering
These fields can span things such as designing airships and UAVs with aerospace engineering, designing artificial heart valves in biomedical engineering, and engineering cells in synthetic biology. Needless to say, Engineering straddles multiple subjects, including Maths, Science, Computer Science and DT.
Engineering at university
Studying Engineering at university can look different based on the university you choose. Some universities, such as Cambridge, don’t have a huge number of Engineering courses; most students study the course “Engineering” which offers ability to specialise later on within the course, via optional modules.
Other universities, such as Imperial College London, offers may different Engineering course variants, meaning students join the university already specialising to a certain extent. It can be good to pick a broader course, as sometimes one’s idea of studying a subject doesn’t end up matching the reality of studying it, and it may be that, in studying the course, one is drawn to a slightly different area to what they expected. But, for students who are sure of what they want to home in on, the more specialised courses may be best for them.
One thing to note, to get to the very cutting edge of fields like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, one tends to do a Masters or PhD, so there is always the scope to specialise at this level, beyond a more general undergraduate course.
Competitive universities may have requirements such as admissions tests (ESAT or PAT) and interviews, so it is important to check what is expected of you when deciding on which courses to apply for; our tutors can help with this.
How can our tuition help?
As Engineering isn’t directly taught at school, Engineering tuition will revolve around:
- Consolidating relevant subject content (mostly Maths and Physics)
- Exploring extension areas and applications of STEM subjects to Engineering
- University course discussions
- Personal Statement support
- Admissions test support and practice
- Admissions interview practice
For undergraduate and postgraduate students, we also offer longer term mentorship services and intensive tuition packages. We can offer Engineering careers consulting and advice, too.
